The background of the storyline
The idea of the film THE MAGIC TALISMAN was already born in the beginning
of 2002. The first month was filled with writing down the main parts
of the story, later on they were combinded with each other. The difficulty
there was to invent unprecedented items. At this Peter Makal gives
a great support, his creativity lead us to original ideas we implemented
immediately. The challenge was primarily to juggle the creative ideas
and the technical settings with the wish for an easy comrehension
on the part of the audience. After many sleepless nights and busy
days the duty was done. A year later the screen-play with over three
hundred pages was completed.

The
actors
It's interesting that in first place all leading actors are theatre
and mime artists. That's why there were no problems in acting and
facial play in front of a movie camera. Even so the casting was not
easy and took plenty of time. But it was of great importance to carry
out the casting well considered. As the casting was approaching we
visited many theatre plays turning our attention to the transformation
of the played parts. On base of this items we cast the play. Again
Peter Makal with his theatrical experience of more than 40 years was
a great help for us. In a two-week course in Makal City Theater in
Stuttgart all actors were prepared for their film roles. The shooting
started in 2004.

Locations
It required a lot of time finding locations showing no evidence of
civilisation. THE MAGIC TALISMAN takes place in a medieval world and
has a demand for a natural environment. The first shots with little
Barbara and Sankrodom were made in a stalactite cave. In the Slovak
Kysuckom open-air museum we shot the rural scenes. Helena Kotvasová,
the curator, was very helpful and protected us from the common tourist
track. A lot of important scenes were made at Mörike-School in Esslingen
during the school holidays. For example the science lab was modified
in an alchemist's laboratory and the gym was turned into a green-screen
studio. The scenes at the king's court were shot at Heimsheim Castle.
The sundown we filmed in the Austrian Alpes. So we made thousands
of kilometres in the course of the shooting and travelled half of
Europe.

Costumes
and requisites
All costumes are loans by Makal-City-Theater Stuttgart. The creation
of the requisites took nearly a year. In this connection the originality
and artistic processing were in the main focus. At this the 2-metre-high
mirror with the golden-decorated figures and masks was most demanding.
For the Sankrodom-scenes a huge hall was arranged with dragon statues,
candlesticks and flags. The thrown in the middle was decorated with
skulls and dragons serving as armrests. The kitchen-scene was shot
in a medieval cellar vault.
